Some History

First started By the PUG DOG CLUB OF BRITISH COLUMBIA in the summer of 1995 when a pug that was 6 ½ years old, and had only one eye was in immediate and desperate need of rescuing. Since that date the PDCBC has rescued the equivalent of 20 pugs a year.

Youngest pug in "Pug Rescue" was a black male pug puppy named "Coal". He was just 2 months old. Reason given for surrendering him was that the lady had no time for him.

Oldest pug rescued was from the SPCA, and was considered around 12 years old.

Some other History

The Pug is a high maintenance breed that needs a lot of care. Depending on where it comes from, also lots of medical care.

Pug Dog Club of BC Rescue was receiving at least 20 pugs yearly since 1995. We wanted to draw attention to the fact that people were buying the breed, not aware of the drawbacks of such a high maintenance breed. As a Rescue Group we knew that people were buying without educating themselves.

Sandra Todosychuk is the inventor and founder of the Pug Dog Club of B.C. Pug Chuck wagon Event since 1998. An event started to inform the public about the breed. To teach the public to educate themselves about the Pug before buying it.

To try to prevent the public from buying a dog that was unsuitable for the family, and to educate the public to research breeds before buying, and then only from Reputable breeders, not from pet stores that support puppy mills and back yard breeders.

RESCUE WORK IN THE COMING YEARS

The addition of the last few years of the sales of cross – bred pugs beagle/pug crosses known as puggles, Boston Terrier/pug crosses and etc will undoubtedly add to the rescue list when the purchasers learn that the list of genetic problems doubles with the crossing of two or more breeds and their medical expenses also double.

These cross bred dogs are not going to grow up looking like (or acting like) the vision that the purchasing public had in mind when they bought the cross-bred "designer dogs".

There will also be the discovery that these cross-bred dogs, known as "designer dogs" enabled disreputable sellers to charge as much for a cross-bred as a well bred purebred dog. Purchasers will realize they have been taken.

THE PUG DOG CLUB OF WESTERN CANADA

RESCUE

THE BEGINNING
The Pug Dog Club Of Western Canada is a fairly new Club. It was founded in APRIL 29, 2002

The PDCWC organized a Rescue committee on February 07, 2003.

There are very good breeders of purebred dogs in the Prairie Provinces of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Of course, they will always have the competition of those who want to make money (and a living) by breeding these animals that most purchasers view as pets.

They sell at a cheaper price, and usually for a good reason.

It was recognized that there were "special needs" for Rescue on the Prairie Provinces.

These are the "Farming" Provinces, where some breeders of animals look at animals as livestock, and treat them as such rather than pets.

Some breeders of animals in the Provinces tend to breed litters and sell to pet stores, brokers, on streets and in swap meets. They breed and sell unregistered and without guarantee or backup.

Now we have the "Designer Dogs". Mutts that cost the purchaser as much as any pure bred dog that an ethical breeder has worked hard to produce. We are sure to see many of these cross-bred pugs in rescue.
